Our Mission – Everyone is Welcome
The mission of the YMCA: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. YMCA Camp Cullen strives to make each camper feel like we’ve been waiting just for them. Each child is instantly made to feel special and know they belong. Intentional programming and group work builds on an understanding in every child of diversity, equity and inclusion in the camp and broader community.
History
Camping has been a cornerstone of the YMCA of Greater Houston for over a century, with roots dating back to 1910. YMCA Camp Cullen, located on 500 acres of scenic land, has been a key part of this tradition since it opened in 1975, becoming the first Houston YMCA camp with full accommodations for both boys and girls. Since then, Camp Cullen has played a vital role in youth development, offering not only summer camps but also, beginning in 1976, an Outdoor Education center for Houston Independent School District’s fifth graders. By 2010, around 70,000 students had participated in outdoor classrooms at the camp.
The camp’s facilities, however, have undergone significant change. In July 2010, a fire devastated the historic dining hall, forcing the camp to close for two years. Fortunately, this provided an opportunity for growth. A master plan for renewal, completed just before the fire, led to a $22 million investment that transformed the camp with new cabins, dining, activity spaces, and more, ensuring that it would continue to serve future generations.
At its core, Camp Cullen offers much more than just a place to stay; it’s a place for youth to discover and thrive. The camp is designed with intentional programming, allowing campers to choose their schedules while being challenged to develop new skills. The staff, carefully selected and rigorously trained, serve as both leaders and friends, committed to excellence in creating a supportive and fun environment.
