Summer 2026 Update

Dear Camp Cullen Families,

You have likely seen recent news coverage about updated safety guidelines and licensing requirements for Texas summer camps, including reports that only nine camps in the state have received their renewed license so far. We want you to know exactly where Camp Cullen stands.

The safety and well-being of our campers have always been, and will always be, our top priority. We have been licensed with the state and American Camping Association (ACA) accredited for many years.

Camp Cullen is fully compliant with all of the new requirements. Importantly, our camper cabins are not located in a FEMA-mapped flood zone.

Here are additional ways we’ve enhanced our safety protocols:

• Updated Emergency Action Plan meeting all new state requirements.
• Installation of end-to-end fiber-optic internet connection with back-up broadband
• Upgraded camp-wide public alert system operating through our existing two-way radio rather than cell or internet.
• Additional nighttime path lighting.
• Emergency signage and maps around camp and in cabins
• Expanded day-one orientation with emergency response training.

In March, we submitted all required materials, including our extensive Emergency Action Plan, to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and are currently awaiting final approval as part of the statewide review process. These plans have also been shared with the Trinity County Emergency Management Department.

Our team took a proactive and thorough approach from the very beginning, planning well ahead, working closely with local emergency partners, and building upon the strong safety procedures, staff training, and supervision standards that have been part of Camp Cullen for generations.

We feel confident in the comprehensive safety plans we have in place and are committed to keeping families informed if anything changes.
